Summary: דוד found out that שאול died. Dovid had the messenger killed, because he played a role in שאול's death.

According to initial reports, דוד has come out of hiding. Once one of the top ranking soldiers in שאול המלך's army and husband of שאול's daughter, דוד has been living in fear of the king and his army for a while. When דוד was in צקלג, a messenger told דוד that שאול had died, and that he helped him die. דוד sentenced the messenger to death for killing the king. דוד then began mourning and he composed a קינה about שאול's death. דוד has come to חברון, and become the king over יהודה, and איש־בשת has become the king of the rest of בני ישראל.

Why did the messenger kill שאול intentionally? Wasn't he on the same side as שאול?

Dear פלטיאל,

Actually, שאול asked the messenger to kill him, so the פלשתים could not take credit for killing him. He was already almost dead.
